Another episode outside the timeline concerning Halan and Aster, “Beacon Twenty Three” fills in even more of the Beacon’s story. In Bart’s possibly biased retelling of his own history, we learned about Dr. Ree Avalon’s tenure as the Beacon’s first keeper. It was during her time there that people began interacting with the Artifact. Similar to Aleph’s transcendence from a couple episodes ago, Avalon’s close contact with the Artifact resulted in – something. Whatever it was though, she did not return to the Beacon.
We also learned about a version of “The Shining” in space featuring a young family and the unknown and possible malignant presence of the Artifact in their lives. Bart acted as nanny and playmate for the child, Parsim, whom we learn later becomes Aster Calyx.
All of this took place as a ruse to keep a potential bomber from fleeing the Beacon after attempting to destroy it. Gabby constructs a coherent possible timeline for all of the events in this episode.
